Objectively Non-objective

From today’s  Brooks/Collins  column in the NYTimes:

Hence the truism that each journalist is corrupted by one central bias — the desire to show we are smarter than whomever it is we are writing about.

Why this fanatical impulse to cast every pronoun into the objective case?  So strange.  This one just doesn’t sound right.
